Its finally summer! For some well-deserved chill time on the beach, its time to whip out the BBQ’s, dig out that swimwear and jet off on a vacation. But for many of us, summer also brings temptations of excessive sun exposure, sweet treats, hay fever and other health woes – so it’s just as essential to look after yourself in the hotter climate. Fortunately for you, this summer we’ve put together our top 3 tips to stay jolly and healthy – keep these on your radar and enjoy your summer holiday without guilt…
Drink lots and lots of water
Heat and sweat can leave your body dehydrated during the hot summer months. A shortage of water is damaging to your body and can also make you want food even if you’re not actually hungry. Staying hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day is extremely essential. A nice trick is to add a few slices of cucumber or lemon to create a detox for your body as well as a new flavour. Do not forget to substitute your plastic straws for bamboo straws.
Wear SPF
To protect your skin from damaging UV rays, it is important to use a sun lotion of at least SPF 30 – even better, 50. For sensitive skin, a mineral-based sunscreen is best. Try not sitting in the sun for too long during peak hours in order to minimize UV radiation, but if you’re planning to be out in the sun for a long time, make sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours or so or even just after swimming and wear a big sun hat to protect your head and face.
Exfoliate
Summer causes an increase of dead skin cells, so to maintain your smooth and silky skin it is essential to exfoliate. To achieve this summer glow, you don’t need to purchase any expensive products; simply use a loafer for a light scrub or create your own exfoliation lotion consisting of oatmeal, yoghurt and milk.
